The township was named "Millburn" in 1857, as a tribute to a local mill built on a stream, with "burn" being the Scottish name for "stream." Shortly after 1870, Stewart Hartshorn, inventor of the roller window shade, decided to make his home here and enter the real estate business to establish an "ideal community." He purchased and resold much of the "short hills" area and adopted the Indian name for his community.

Due to its close proximity to attractive town centers in literally every direction, Short Hills offers a wide variety of dining opportunities within easy reach. While it would take pages to name all the wonderful surrounding restaurants, here is a sampling.
Starting with The Mall at Short Hills, a few of the many options include Legal Sea Foods which is an iconic 70 year old Boston seafood restaurant, California Pizza Kitchen for satisfying pizza and signature Italian dishes and The Cheesecake Factory for upscale casual dining and lots more than cheesecake. Short Hills also has a Benihana restaurant for traditional Japanese style dining prepared in front of you at your hibachi table. In downtown Millburn, favorites include The Hills Tavern, famous for its creative cocktails, cold craft beers and lively bar scene with good food too and Basilico which offers consistently great Italian fare in a sophisticated, chic atmosphere with the option to dine al fresco in nice weather. The recently opened Moonshine Supper Club has become a popular bar and lounge offering contemporary American comfort food with style.
For something a bit different, Khun Thai offers a mix of Thai and Asian fusion menu selections that are always delicious. Residents all quickly discover the famous Millburn Deli which rapidly becomes a frequent destination for just about everyone. The employees are great fun and the sandwiches fantastic. Also in Millburn, La Strada, across from the movie theatre, is well known for their delicious eat in or takeout pizza and relaxed family atmosphere.
In Summit, there are many wonderful lunch and dinner choices. At the high end of the scale is Roots Steak House with a sophisticated décor, fantastic New York style steak house dining and a great wine list. Fiorino Ristorante is known for consistently delicious northern Italian dishes and its unique private wine room. For upscale casual family dining, Marco Polo restaurant has been serving delicious Italian and Continental cuisine for over 80 years. A brunch or lunchtime favorite is The Committed Pig offering pancakes, burgers and everything in between. Al fresco seating is available in nice weather.

SHORT HILLS TRANSPORTATION
Buses and trains provide easy access to New York City as well as to Hoboken, Newark and Jersey City. Located on the NJ Transit Morris & Essex train line (also referred to as the Midtown Direct train line), the Short Hills train station is something out of a fairy tale, tucked away in the center of town. Express trains from Short Hills to NYC take only 40 minutes. Relax, sleep or work on double decker trains and arrive at work fresh and ready to start the day.
Commuter parking lots are available for residents. In addition, buses pick up commuters at various points in town. Short Hills is a quick 15 to 20 minutes from Newark Airport and is close to major highways.

SHORT HILLS SCHOOL SYSTEM
With all Short Hills has to offer, nothing is more important to residents and buyers than the Short Hills school system. Consistently highly ranked by New Jersey Monthly Magazine and other publications, the Short Hills school system is beyond reproach. Millburn and Short Hills share the Millburn Middle School and Millburn High School, while Short Hills has three of its own elementary schools: Deerfield, Glenwood and Hartshorn. If you live more than 2 miles from the Elementary or Middle School, or 2.5 miles from the High School, you will likely qualify for free busing. If you live closer, you can apply for subscription busing but a seat cannot always be guaranteed. SHORT HILLS CULTURAL AND RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
The Paper Mill Playhouse, an outstanding theater for over 40 years, is located on Brookside Drive in Millburn. The Paper Mill Playhouse is one of the country's best known regional theaters. In 1972, Governor William Cahill proclaimed Paper Mill the "Official State Theatre of New Jersey." The theatre has been cited as a State Center of Artistic Excellence and as a Major Impact and Distinguished Arts Organization by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and in 2016 was the recipient of the Tony Award for best regional theatre.
The theater offers a full range of cultural events, including musicals, plays and children programs. It is large enough to accommodate the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and the New Jersey State Opera. Located steps from the theatre, the Carriage House Restaurant is perfect for those looking for a wonderful evening of theatre and elegant dining. It offers a creative menu that takes its cue from the current Paper Mill show, a complete bar, a diverse wine list, and an assortment of delectable desserts.
A popular township destination is the 16-acre Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary, located on Forest Drive in Short Hills. Created from undeveloped woodlands by its former owners, the Hartshorns, specifically by the daughter of Stewart Hartshorn, it is now owned and maintained by the Township and operated by the Arboretum Association. Within its beautiful forests are hundreds of varieties of birds, wild flowers and trees. The Arboretum sponsors classes, lectures, workshops and field trips in nature study and crafts.
Greenwood Gardens is a 28 acre property adjacent to Old Short Hills Park. Opened to the public only in 2003 after extensive renovation, it combines formal gardens, open meadows, woodland and
pasture areas. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is a model of historic preservation.
The most widely used recreation area in Short Hills is the 36-acre Gero Park off White Oak Ridge Road. Maintained by the Township's recreation department, it offers a wide variety of recreation programs, including a community swimming pool, a par 3 golf course and tennis courts. The Township also maintains an outstanding free public library service.
The Millburn-Short Hills Historical Society was formed in 1975 in conjunction with the celebration of the United States Bicentennial to stimulate interest in the history, architecture and genealogy of the Township.
SHORT HILLS SERVICES AND UTILITIES
Electricity and gas are provided by Jersey Central Power & Light (FirstEnergy) and Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G), respectively. Water is provided by NJ American Water Company. Garbage collection is provided free of charge by the Township and sewage treatment (at an additional charge) by the Joint Meeting of Essex and Union County. The Township picks up trash twice weekly, and there is an active recycling program. A drop off recycling center is located on Main Street in Millburn.
