Kean Estate Sells for a Record $6.2M

Craig McCarthy of has posted the following article regarding the sale of the Kean Estate in Livingston NJ:

The Kean estate, a 30-room stone mansion that has undergone extensive renovations over the last two decades, sold Wednesday for $6.2 million, the realtor said.

The mansion, set atop the highest point in Livingston, was the original home of 10-term U.S. Congressman Robert W. Kean, the father of former Gov. Thomas Kean. The sprawling mansion features 14 bedrooms, seven bathrooms, 15 fireplaces and two full kitchens. 

Its taxes are estimated at $95,320 per year, according to Zillow.

Since 1997, the previous owners spared no expense restoring the mansion's luxurious features, such as the gold gilded moldings, marble and wood flooring, marble baths and a 13-foot high mahogany library, according to Prominent Properties Sotheby's International Realty

The property also boasts a six-car garage, in-ground pool, tennis court, garden house and indoor squash court. The closing set a record for the highest sale price and Livingston and second highest in Essex County. Realtor Tony Verducci made the record-breaking sale.

And just a couple blocks away is celebrity talk show host Wendy Williams, who bought a house in Livingston in 2009 for $2.1 million.

This century-old stone mansion, the longtime home of 10-term U.S. Rep. Robert W. Kean (the father of former Gov. Thomas Kean), is impressive enough in its sheer numbers -- 14 bedrooms, seven full bathrooms, 15 fireplaces, and two full kitchens, according to the listing. (And speaking of sheer numbers, taxes are $95,320 a year, adjusted from 2013's $153, 442.)

But its current owners, who purchased the property in 1997, also spent years restoring the home, which now features custom gilded moldings, Venetian plaster walls, Corinthian-style pillars, hand-painted murals, and coffered, tray and domed ceilings -- the marketing materials dub it "Versailles in Livingston."
